ABOUT MARIYUM

Mariyum Rizwan is a Philadelphia-based investigative multimedia journalist with a passion for covering politics, policy, community stories, culture, and breaking news. A recent graduate of Temple University with a B.A. in Journalism, she currently serves as a Broadcast Trainee at Fox 29, where she is enhancing her skills in multimedia reporting and production.

Her recent work includes an article published in The Philadelphia Inquirer, as well as serving as the newsletter editor for CNN commentator, Michael Smerconish. She also developed strong editorial skills as the former Features Editor of The Temple News and Copy Editor of The Templar yearbook.

Mariyum’s experience spans notable internships, including reporting positions with The Trentonian, WHYY, and Central Desi, where she was the inaugural journalism fellow covering New Jersey’s South Asian diaspora. These roles have provided her with a strong understanding of reporting fundamentals, including AP Style, and have sharpened her ability to cover diverse communities with sensitivity and accuracy, ensuring that underrepresented voices are heard and accurately represented in her work. She has served as an intern for U.S. Senator Bob Casey (PA-D), where she gained valuable firsthand experience in the legislative process, constituent services, and policy analysis. This role deepened her understanding of the inner workings of government and the impact of political decisions on communities.

Her work has been recognized through honors like the Society of Environmental Journalists Fellowship and the Klein College Free Speech and Advocacy Award for her campus protest coverage of the war in Gaza.
